Jhiva For Life: Ragi/Finger Millet Round Up

When I chose ragi (a.k.a Finger Millet) for JFI I didn’t expect my inbox to be flooded with so many healthy recipes. Some of these ragi recipes are traditional, some very modern. There is something for everybody, so there is no more excuse for not using this healthy grain regularly. I thank my food blogging buddies for their enthusiasm in participating in this event and making this a grand success. Now let’s check the recipes.
The recipes have been classified under various categories. Please click the drop-down menu to see the recipes:

Hi Madhuram

I’m fine Vani. Thank you so much for your concern. Will be back soon.
I have been having a hard time finding raji. Found one bag that said it was wheat and something else but I have no idea as I knew it was supposed to be finger millet! I would also like to find whole finger millet so that I can do sprouting!
I live in Worcester MA USA and i hope this signs me up for your newsletter!
Hugs Vona
I love your site and would like to know if can you send me a link to your Indian diabetic recipes or organize them in your site under a link so several of my friends and their parents can benefit from them?
Thanks Shree. Will do something about it.
With all those ragi recipes I don’t know where to start! What I do need to know is where do I find whole ragi! I have googled the subject visited about ten different Indian Grocers and most don’t even carry the flouer let alone the seeds! Please some one get me in touch with a supplier of red findermillet whole seed supplier!
Thanks with hugs Vona.
Vona, whole ragi is not available in the US but ragi flour is available in almost all the Indian grocery stores.
Well thanks for confirming what I sort of guessed! As Ragi is used here for erosion control and as ornamental plantings I don’t see why they wont let us have whoe ragi to eat!!!
Hugs Vona
Does any one know of a wonderful, sinfully rich ragi snack made with
puffed ragi flour? Whole ragi is first roasted till it pops like
corn (arlalu or flower-ragi aral mavu)and then ground fine.
The flour is mixed with a lot of ghee and either jaggery or sugar and
some hot milk and made into small-fist sized balls. The stuff was
delicious. I realize that it probably doesn’t do much for weight loss
but I remember my mother making this as a special treat for us young
people
