Back in US I used to buy the Chocolate flavor Ovaltine malt mix, the one which mentions "fortified with 8 minerals and vitamins".  I did check the ingredients list and confirmed that it did not have eggs before preparing this Ovaltine frosting.

So it did not occur to  me to check the ingredients list while buying Ovaltine in Canada. When I checked it later (after somebody in my blog mentioned about eggs in Ovaltine) I did find "dried whole egg" in the ingredients list.  So another reason to check labels even if the name is same.  Interestingly the regular malt flavor Ovaltine does not have eggs in the list.

I read in Wikipedia that Ovaltine was first produced in Switzerland under the name Ovomaltine, which refers to eggs and malt.  Since "ovo" refers to eggs, it's always advisable to check twice before buying.

That's interesting, I'm sure I had Ovaltine as a kid (but not since, so maybe its changed).

You can never read ingredients too much.  I was VERY surprised one day when I just happened (a weird hunch?) to read the list on the box of microwave popcorn that I'd already bought, and saw that it now contained eggs where it had not before.  Yes, eggs.  In microwave popcorn.  Nothing is safe.

Eggs in popcorn?  But why?  Hmm... I immediately checked the brand I have Orville's Smart Pop and it does not have eggs.

The only think I could think of was for yellow colour, but that's probably not it.  I don't recall which brand it was now... this was a couple years ago.

Oh really? you can find eggs in ovaltine's ingredients? This is really surprised me.
This indicates that it is important to check ingredients all the time.

Thanks for sharing this madhuram.
