Eggs are one of the most common food allergens especially for children. It occurs as early as infancy and most children but not all outgrow their allergy by the time they reach adolescence.

It is also not that uncommon that some adults develop egg allergy later in their life. Like any other food allergy not everyone react the same way. The signs and symptoms varies from person to person and can be as mild as rashes in the skin, nasal allergies to severe vomiting or other digestive issues.

Egg allergy unlike nut allergy, peanuts in particular, rarely causes anaphylaxis, which is a life-threatening reaction.

What causes egg allergy?

Food allergies are a result of an overreacting immune system. In the case of an egg allergy, certain egg proteins when consumed is identified as harmful by the immune system thereby releasing histamine and other chemicals which causes allergic signs and symptoms.

While both egg yolks and egg whites contain the proteins that can cause allergies, allergy to egg whites is the most common.

There are so many other terms used to denote eggs while labelling and the onus lies on the consumer to be diligent about it if you know that you are allergic to eggs and want to avoid getting in contact with eggs or any by products thereof.

Sometimes it’s not just egg allergies, many people do not consume anything with eggs due to religious beliefs. They should also look out for this information while going through a product label.
