Mango Halwa
| Tweet | ![]() |
I had a can of mango pulp (from Indian store) and was inspired by RedChillies’ banana halwa to prepare mango halwa. I was not sure how it would come out or how it would taste but to my surprise I was able to get perfect pieces and it tasted like the mango bars (aam papad) which we get in India. This halwa can be prepared using just two ingredients, mango pulp and very little ghee. No need to add extra sugar because the pulp is already very sweet.
| Mango Halwa Recipe |
- 2 and 3/4 cups Mango Pulp
- 1 tablespoon Ghee
- In a heavy bottom vessel (I used a small pressure cooker) add the ghee and when it is hot add the mango pulp.
- Keep stirring the mixture every 10-15 minutes so that it does not stick to the vessel.
- The mixture will reduce in quantity, there will be a change in color and after 45 minutes transfer this mixture to a greased (with very little ghee) plate. I used 2 and 3/4 cups of pulp and it cooked down to 3/4ths of a cup approximately. So a very small plate is enough.
- I left the plate undisturbed for one more hour and then tried cutting it into pieces and it came out perfectly. Garnish it with nuts of your choice.
- After cooking the sweet I googled Mango Halwa and found that it can be done even more quickl in a microwave oven. A couple of food bloggers have done it but nobody has sliced it. So I’m going to try that the next time.
- I have an electric range so it has taken about 45-50 minutes for me. I think if cooked in a gas stove it should only take half the time.
- You could use the entire can of mango pulp too, it will measure abut 3 and 1/2 cups. I reserved the balance to make mango milk shake. If you use the entire can, you would have to cook it for couple more minutes.
This mango halwa goes to Srivalli’s Mithai Mela.

Nice sweet Madhu..Is it possible to make this sweet with ripe mangoes..ie: by extracting the juice of ripe mangoes?
BTW, I must say that I come to know of so many food events taking place through your entries to the events.
Priya

YUM! I made this one before, love the aroma and taste, good one Madhu!:)
It’s adios to Anoop and Lil as I said at FH. Not fair at all since the guy they put back last week was horrible again. Well, people always get African American one first to vote out, then the Asian and then the Latino, so it’s Alison’s turn next I guess! Hahaha!!
That was really hilarious Asha.
I like how simple the recipe. With just 2 ingredients u have come up with something interesting. The end product looks nice.I rather prefer the stove top over the microwave.
Looks awesome..love the recipe

Wow.. that looks perfect. I’m a big fan of the mango bars we get in INdia – i remember naturo from when I was a kid. Can’t wait to try this sometime – sounds super simple.
hi.madhurm
thanks a lot again for the good recipe.
i have a smll question.Do u grind the pulp of mango or
use it as i is.And can we use the pulp of Alphonso we get it in Indian stores.
Yes Sheetal, I meant the pulp we get in Indian stores. You can use any variety I guess. Mine was Kesar mango pulp. No need to grind it, it’s already smooth only.
Looks gorgeous!
